From survival to triumph: the real stories of lives transformed at Shedrow

Bailey and Blaze

Against all odds, a critically ill and starving rescue mare named Bailey fought through severe sickness to safely deliver a miracle colt, Blaze, in April 2026. While Bailey beautifully completed her earthly mission in July after receiving endless love, her incredible spirit and heroic legacy live on today through Blaze, who is thriving, growing strong, and surrounded by adoration at Shedrow Farm.

Comanche

Comanche is a resilient, 34+-year-old stallion rescued from severe starvation and neglect in Illinois. Despite battling arthritis and lymphatic cancer, this loving guy thrives on daily medication, chiropractic care, and specialized massage therapy. He shares a deeply special bond with his dedicated volunteer, Cheryl, who lovingly coordinates his care.

Owner Surrender

Spartan

Spartan arrived in 2020 suffering from extreme neglect, a heart murmur, and severe starvation. Through a careful refeeding program and veterinary care, he made an incredible recovery. A lip tattoo later revealed that Spartan was actually Dunkin Bend—a phenomenal former racehorse once trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen who won over $220,000 on the track and was once considered a Kentucky Derby prospect.

Easy Peasy

Easy Peasy was a rescued racehorse who survived severe starvation thanks to his former trainer, Artemio. Despite losing his teeth from eating wood to survive, Easy maintained a joyful, goofy personality and served as a dedicated "seeing-eye horse" for his blind companion, Mr. Perfect, until passing away in 2023.

Cowboy

Cowboy is a resilient horse rescued alongside his mother, Ophelia, from a Louisiana kill pen after their owner passed away. Although an old, inoperable leg injury gives him a "wonky" walk, he is completely pain-free and full of life. Today, he runs with his friends, participates in therapy groups, and even dresses as Santa's elf to bring joy to children in December.

Katie

Katie is a former Amish workhorse who was rescued from a dangerous Pennsylvania auction just moments before being shipped to slaughter in Canada. Traumatized by severe past abuse, she initially cowered in the back of her stall and was terrified by sounds as simple as a snapping carrot, yet she fiercely protected her sick companion, Ben. Thanks to years of patient dedication from sanctuary volunteers, Katie has made a remarkable transformation, overcoming her deep fears and learning to trust humans as she continues to blossom every day.

Chief Bear

A majestic Thoroughbred gelding descended from racing royalty, transitioned from a $500,000 yearling to a sanctuary resident after a foot fracture ended his career. When he later faced a life-threatening bout of colic from ingesting hidden baling twine, his devoted adopter funded an emergency surgery that saved his life. Though intestinal scarring permanently restricted him to a strict, specialized diet instead of pasture grass, Chief now thrives as a beloved therapy horse at Shedrow Farm, teaching visitors about boundaries and respect..

Always Flirting

Born in 2010, the Thoroughbred racehorse Always Flirting was rescued from an Oklahoma kill pen and brought to Shedrow Farm to heal. Through patient care, nutrition, and love, he regained his proud personality and found a permanent home. Today, he lives safely at the farm and uses his quiet presence to comfort and reassure frightened new rescues.
